When you hear the phrase "cheap cricket bats," your mind might instantly jump to poor quality, poor-full of blemishes willow, or a bat that will barely last the season.
But let's bust that myth right now. Cheap doesn’t have to mean rubbish. In fact, some of the best budget-friendly cricket bats are made from the same English willow used in higher-priced models, they just come without the frills or premium branding.
At Trogon Cricket, we’re proud to offer excellent value cricket bats for players of all ages and abilities. From end-of-season offers to clearance deals and affordable junior ranges, we stock a wide selection of bats that combine performance with price. Whether you're a parent buying for your child or a weekend player looking to save some money, our cheap cricket bats give you real quality without the hefty price tag.
If you’re shopping on a budget, the key is knowing what you’re looking at. First, consider the size.
Juniors need lighter bats suited to their height and strength, there is nothing worse than getting a bat that is too heavy for you, while adults can choose between short handle, long handle, high middle, low middle, different grades of willow, there are so many choices. One key feature is the grade of willow.
There are 3 primary grades of willow that we stock at Trogon. Grade 1 is top-tier (most expensive), Grade 2 (brilliant bats, probably the best option) but Grade 3 English willow often offers the best performance for price - you see, you getting a lovely bat, it want have the beautiful characteristics of a grade 1 (perfectly straight grains) but the performance will be almost as good and it will last for longer, that's a fact, so for a cheap cricket bat, look no further than a grade 3.
Kashmir willow is another option, heavier and less responsive but more durable and typically cheaper and is a great alternative to English willow, especially for junior bats.
Don't forget about the bat’s pickup and balance. A bat might weigh more on the scale but feel lighter in your hands due to how it’s balanced and this is exactly what ever player wants, and at Trogon we call it the goldilocks zone, a bat that is heavier on the scales but feels light in your hands and pick-up, its the perfect combination.
Handle type (round or semi-oval), grip, and spine shape can also impact performance, especially for younger or newer players, these are things to certainly take into consideration, especially if you are a more bottom handed players, maybe got for a semi-oval handle. There are lots of choices available.
Parents, we get it (at the point of writing this my kids are 9 and 12) Cricket gear can get expensive quickly. But don’t worry, this is why we stock a wide selection of junior and beginner-friendly bats that won’t cost a fortune. Our junior bat sizes start from size 3 through to Harrow, and we offer affordable options for English willow cricket bats.
Look for junior-size options with a balanced pick-up and decent ping (which all of ours come with as we hand press individually). And if you’re not sure which size is right, our bat size guide and expert support can help you find the perfect fit for your child.
The right bat depends on three things: size, skill level, and budget. Short Handle (SH) is the most common adult size, while younger players often use Harrow, Academy, or sizes 4 to 6, but again, look for a grade of willow that meets your budget, as mentioned above a Grade 3 still offers great performance but doesn't break the bank, and let's be honest, who really cares how many straight grains it has.
Beginners might benefit from a mid-weight bat with a mid-to-low middle, providing better control and forgiveness, the higher up the spine the middle is positioned the lighter the pick-up (someting to always consider). If you’re unsure, use our online size guide or get in touch with us, we’re always happy to help match you with the best option.
It’s tempting to assume expensive bats will automatically make you a better player. But the difference between cheap and expensive bats often comes down to aesthetics and fine margins.
Expensive bats might have more pronounced, straight(er) and more grains, a larger sweet spot, or be made from higher-grade willow. But for beginners, juniors, or social players, a Grade 3 English willow bat can still deliver great performance without the premium price tag. It’s about matching the bat to your level, not your wallet.
Let's be honest, after a few months of using the bat the likehood is you will be adding an anti-scuff sheet to the blade anyway, so nobody will see the grains.
