At Trogon, every bat in our Size 3 range is handmade from high-quality English willow, using traditional methods in our dedicated workshop. The size 3 cricket bat is ideally suited for young cricketers aged around 7 to 8 years old. These bats are designed with junior players in mind—light enough for comfortable pick-up, yet powerful enough to help them learn the game with confidence. A size 3 bat gives children a chance to build proper technique, play all-round strokes, and most importantly, have fun while doing it.
We don’t cut corners when it comes to quality—regardless of bat size. Each Trogon size 3 cricket bat is made by hand using English willow, and you can choose from a full range of grades:
Every size 3 cricket bat begins with the careful selection of English willow. We hand-pick each cleft for its clean grain structure, moisture content, and lightness—prioritising pieces that are ideal for younger cricketers. Our focus is on performance and durability, even at this smaller size, ensuring each cleft meets our exacting standards before it enters the workshop.
The first step in the making process is pressing the cleft. This is done using a precision-controlled press that compresses the willow’s fibres, increasing its strength and enhancing the bat’s performance and ping. For our size 3 cricket bats, we go for a slightly softer press, which helps create a more forgiving sweet spot—perfect for junior players still honing their timing.
Once pressed, the cleft is spliced and fitted with a handle. Depending on your child’s preference, we insert either a round or semi-oval handle (our stock bats are always round-handles). Every handle is fixed securely, bound and glued with care to ensure durability through hours of use in nets and matches.
Following handling, the bat enters the shaping stage. Using traditional tools like drawknives and spokeshaves, we hand-shape the bat to ensure the perfect weight, balance, pick-up and feel. This method allows us to tailor the profile with precision—keeping the pick-up light while still allowing for generous edge size and spine height.
After shaping, the bat is finely profiled and sculpted using our traditional tools to bring out its final shape. We create a powerful shape with large edges and a high spine, all while maintaining a light pick-up weight that junior cricketers need. This blend of power and control gives young players the best platform to build their game.
Once the shaping is complete, the bat is sanded by hand to achieve a smooth surface, free from blemishes or imperfections. We then polish the blade to enhance the natural beauty of the willow before applying our signature Trogon stickers. A light linseed-wax finish is also added if selected, which offers additional protection and helps seal the bat for immediate use.
The final stage is optional knocking-in. If chosen, we prepare the bat for match play by gently compressing the blade’s surface and rounding the edges. This process reduces the risk of damage and ensures your child’s bat is ready to perform from the very first shot.
We understand that young players need a bat that works with their natural strength, not against it. That’s why our size 3 cricket bats are made with weight and balance in mind. All bats in this collection are:

Most 7-year-olds will feel comfortable with a size 3 cricket bat, as it offers the right balance between length, weight, and power for junior players at this stage.
If your child struggles to lift the bat comfortably, plays shots with difficulty, or tends to use only their bottom hand, the bat might be too heavy.
Yes, with proper knocking-in and regular use, a cricket bat can improve in performance as the fibres settle and the bat “opens up” over time.
Junior players should use a bat that allows them to play with correct technique. For a size 3 cricket bat, the ideal weight is typically between 2lb 1oz and 2lb 4oz, depending on strength and skill level.
