Why “Pick-Up Feel” Matters More Than Scale Weight
While the scale weight of a bat is often listed as a key specification, the “pick-up” is more critical to a player’s comfort and performance.
The pick-up is how the bat’s weight is distributed and perceived when held in their stance and when they pick the bat up.
I have written extensively about pick-ups and scale weights and call it the goldilocks zone of weights - you want a bat that weighs around 2lb 6/7oz but picks up around 2lb 4/5oz, for a young growing teenager that is perfect.
Two bats of the same weight can feel vastly different due to factors such as:
- Blade Profile: Full profiles with thick edges may feel heavier than concave profiles with reduced willow.
- Handle Shape: A semi-oval or round handle can change the balance of the bat.
- Sweet Spot Position: A bat with a lower sweet spot, closer to the toe feels heavier on the back lift, while one with a higher sweet spot feels lighter.
For our stock cricket bats we always list these infographics that show where the sweet spot is position (along with handle type and bat shape). As you can see with the lower sweet spot, the mass of the wood is closer to the toe which results in a heavier pick up - click on the link and you can see our collection of low middles/sweet spots.
For your daughter, it’s essential to find a bat that feels light enough to control yet substantial enough to generate power.
This balance is especially crucial as she may still be refining her batting technique - a bat that is too heavy will hamper her performance and technique, most noticeable her top elbow will likely stop dropping.
Bats Designed for Female Cricketers
At Trogon Cricket, we design a specific range of cricket bats tailored for female players.
These bats are crafted to provide a lighter pick-up without compromising on power.
Typically weighing between 2lb 3oz and 2lb 7oz, they feature:
- Larger Edges and Spines: To enhance power and sweet spot size.
- Slimmer Handles: For improved grip and control.
- Custom Options: We can tailor the weight and balance to suit your daughter’s unique needs.
For a 16-year-old, an Academy-sized bat or one of our Ladies bats could be ideal, depending on her height and strength.
Top Tip
As a general rule, if your daughter is looking for large features on a cricket bat but a lightweight, the chances are there will be some concaving of the back, the key is deciding the weight and shape of the bat before you start looking.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Bat for Your Daughter
-
Height and Strength:
- Why It’s Important: A cricket bat that matches your daughter’s height and strength ensures she can handle the bat comfortably and play shots with control and precision. A bat that is too long or heavy can hinder her technique, reduce reaction time, and increase the risk of fatigue or injury.
-
Playing Style:
- Why It’s Important: Every cricketer has a unique playing style, and the bat should complement how your daughter likes to play. If she’s an aggressive batter who loves hitting boundaries, a bat with a lower sweet spot and more weight in the blade will help her maximize power. If she prefers timing the ball and playing elegant strokes, a lighter bat with a higher sweet spot will give her greater control and finesse. Something to think about....
-
Level of Play:
- Why It’s Important: The level of cricket your daughter plays determines how much performance and durability she needs from her bat. Competitive players benefit from higher-grade English willow (Grade 1 or 2) bats that offer superior ping and balance, however these do come with a higher price tag. For casual or beginner cricketers, a more affordable lower-grade willow (Grade 3) may suffice.
-
Custom Weight Adjustments:
- Why It’s Important: Every player is different, and sometimes standard bats don’t quite feel right straight off the shelf. Weight reduction services allow the bat to be fine-tuned to suit your daughter’s specific preferences, balance and pick-up. A bat that feels right in her hands can significantly improve her comfort and confidence at the crease, enabling her to focus entirely on her game.
By carefully considering these factors, you ensure your daughter not only has the right equipment but also feels empowered and comfortable at the crease in both matchs and net practice, setting her up for success as she develops her cricketing skills.
Testing the Bat Before Purchase
Encourage your daughter to test the bat before buying. Here’s how:
-
Check the Pick-Up:
- Have her hold the bat in her stance and practice a few pick ups and shots.
- The bat should feel balanced and not overly heavy in her hands.
-
Simulate Shots:
- Let her practice forward drives, pulls, and cuts to ensure the bat feels responsive.
-
Grip Comfort:
- Ensure the grip feels secure and comfortable. Thin handles can be built up with additional grips if necessary - some people (me included) like a half grip at the bottom, I'm quite a bottom handed player so this means I don't hold the bat as hard with my bottom hand - the alternative to this is having a larger semi-oval handle
Above are the details of a semi-oval handle, I would highly recommend if your daughter is quite a bottom handed player.
So you've purchased your new bat, now it's time to look after it to make sure it lasts a good couple of seasons.
Caring for your New Cricket Bat
Once you’ve chosen the perfect bat, it’s essential to care for it properly:
-
Knocking-In:
- Ensure the bat is knocked in before use to prepare the willow and reduce the risk of cracking.
-
Use a Bat Cover:
- Protect the bat with a cover to prevent damage during storage and transport.
-
Regular Maintenance:
- Apply bat wax to keep the willow nourished.
- Check for cracks or damage, and address them promptly.
Proper care for your cricket bat is essential, especially as you’ve invested in a high-quality piece of equipment.
Cricket bats, particularly those made from premium Grade 1 or Players-grade English willow, are delicate tools designed for performance. They require regular maintenance to ensure durability and optimal functionality.
Regular checks for minor cracks or wear can help you address issues early, saving the bat from severe damage. By caring for your bat, you not only extend its lifespan but also ensure that it consistently delivers peak performance on the field.
Conclusion
For a 16-year-old girl, finding the right cricket bat involves more than just choosing the correct size. It’s about ensuring the bat feels comfortable and performs well in her hands. Factors such as height, strength, playing style, and level of competition should all influence your decision.
